Bloom and Flourish
What motivated you to pursue a career in counselling?
My journey into the world of counselling stemmed from a deep desire to create meaningful connections and promote healing. From a young age, I was acutely aware of the emotional needs of those around me, often sensing the unspoken burdens they carried. As a young adolescent, I would so frequently ask my mother, “Do I have a sign on my head that encourages people to share their stories with me?” For a long time, I didn’t fully understand this beautiful, innate gift. I began my career in human resources, but within a few years, I realised I was on the wrong side of the fence. I was tasked with performance-managing employees who were struggling with personal challenges that affected their work, and I found myself wanting to be on the other side — helping individuals navigate their life challenges so these issues wouldn’t impact them financially, and allow them to live more fulfilling lives.
In early 2016 I took a leap of faith, leaving behind the corporate world and a secure salary to dive into the uncharted waters of the mental health and disability sector as a mentor and support worker—and the rest is history.
What specific areas do you primarily work within?
When I began, I didn’t have a specific area as I was exploring what felt right and reflecting on what I became extremely passionate about. However, throughout the last seven and a half years of my career in counselling, I have primarily worked within the realms of trauma, domestic violence, and supporting neurodiverse individuals. I believe in tailoring approaches to meet the needs of each individual, honouring their experiences and empowering them to navigate their worlds with confidence.
Can you share a recent success or achievement in your counselling work that you're proud of?
Rather than highlighting one particular client, I find it more fitting to express the profound honour it is to hold safe and supportive spaces for clients through their lives. Each client’s journey is unique, and being entrusted with their stories, struggles, and triumphs is a privilege that I do not take lightly. The true achievement lies in the collective progress and healing that occurs within these therapeutic spaces. Witnessing clients of all ages develop resilience, discover their strengths, and move forward with a renewed sense of self is the ultimate reward for me as a counsellor.
What is the most rewarding aspect of being a counsellor for you?
The most rewarding aspect of being a counsellor is witnessing the resilience and growth of my clients. There is an indescribable joy in watching someone move from a place of pain and confusion to one of clarity and empowerment. Holding space for clients as they navigate their journeys and celebrate their victories is a privilege that continually renews my passion for this work.
How do you contribute to the betterment of the profession and your community?
My commitment extends beyond my practice to include the advancement of the counselling profession and the well-being of my community. As a registered ACA supervisor and an educator and mentor at the Australian Institute of Professional Counsellors, I focus on empowering the next generation of counsellors, providing them with the tools and confidence they need to succeed in the field. Additionally, as a behaviour support practitioner, I work with individuals who have complex and dual diagnoses, advocating passionately to ensure they have access to the necessary supports and opportunities to enhance their quality of life. By embracing multiple roles, I actively shape the future of our profession, ensuring its growth and impact. This ongoing dedication drives me to further my own expertise, and I’m excited to be in the process of applying for clinical masters programs for 2025.
Are there any projects or initiatives you're currently involved in?
Absolutely! I’m thrilled to share that I’m collaborating with Georgia Forbes from Collective Feelings on an exciting new venture. Together, we’re creating a business dedicated to offering group supervision and ongoing support for counsellors at all stages of their careers. Whether you’re a newly graduated counsellor or a seasoned professional seeking connection, this will be a safe, empowering community where you can offload, be vulnerable, and share in the wisdom and challenges of our profession.
We’re pouring our hearts into this project, and I can’t wait to unveil what we’ve been working on. We’re aiming to go live on our social media platforms in October/November 2024. This is going to be a transformative space for counsellors, and I’m excited for what’s to come!
What advice would you give to someone considering a career in counselling/psychotherapy?
For those considering a career in counselling, I offer this advice: embrace your journey with an open heart and mind. The path of a counsellor is both rewarding and challenging, requiring resilience, empathy, and continual self-reflection. Engage in your own therapy, seek supportive supervision, and cultivate in ongoing self-care practices. Authenticity and vulnerability are your allies, allowing you to connect deeply with clients and foster transformative healing. A key lesson from my own journey is that you can only guide and support clients to the extent that you've explored and grown yourself.
Is there a quote or philosophy that inspires your work?
A quote that resonates deeply with me is by Carl Rogers: “The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.” This philosophy underpins my approach to counselling, emphasising the importance of self-acceptance as a foundation for growth and change. It resonates with me deeply and inspires me to create spaces where people can feel empowered to embrace their true selves and embark on transformative journeys.
Open question - tell anything that was not asked in the previous questions?
One crucial aspect of my journey that often goes unmentioned is the profound lesson in humility this work has given me. Every client I meet becomes a teacher, offering a unique perspective or insight. As counsellors, we are not the ultimate experts but rather partners in the therapeutic process. This humility creates a dynamic, reciprocal relationship, enriching the therapeutic experience and reminding us of the shared humanity at the heart of our work. No number of books, articles, or professional development training can teach you more than your clients will.
