Counsellor and Clinical Supervisor
Chronic pain affects millions of Australians, and its impact can be seen in almost every aspect of life. From work and relationships to independence and its impact on mental health, for people entering counselling chronic pain often relates to a feeling of being misunderstood and unsupported.
In this autobiography, Dr Dawn Macintyre walks readers through the experience and battle with chronic pain throughout her life. Her life’s journey living beyond simply coping with the challenges of such pain is related in a conversational and positive way. The author authentically examines turbulent times of her life and explains how she got through it, presenting a raw and real narrative. For counsellors without lived experience of chronic pain or chronic health conditions, this book is useful in highlighting some common experiences, including difficulties in dealing with medical systems, feelings of grief, and the impact of chronic pain on relationships, identity, and everyday life.
Dr Macintyre has a doctorate in stigmatised conditions and brings her experiences and expertise as a clinical counsellor and chronic pain behaviourist to her writing. This enables her to interweave theoretical knowledge and practical advice into her personal experiences with chronic pain. Specifically, she highlights the impact of not only invisible chronic health conditions but also the added complexity and nuance in experience when someone is diagnosed with a stigmatised condition. People with experiences of marginalised discrimination or disadvantage may not find their realities mirrored in the author’s reflections on her personal circumstances. However, this book still holds value for those with lived experience of disability and exclusion due to a lack of social awareness and education of chronic pain.
The evolution of Dawn’s life is documented throughout the book, being not just her life and relationships changing over time but also the experience and understanding of her chronic health conditions. The emotional journey as this relationship with her body evolves provides insight into each experience.
From each chapter, she draws lessons learned that could apply to many of those living with chronic pain. This makes this book also a great resource for clients or their support networks, as the author shares the real challenges of living with chronic pain. Examinations of how pain cycles operate, the connections between chronic pain and mental health, and the importance of support from the right health professionals all offer learnings for the casual or professional reader.
Some readers may be able to recognise parts of their own journey in this work, but also benefit from the insights and strategies shared.
For counsellors and other health professionals wanting to explore the impact of chronic health conditions and provide better support, this book will be an invaluable and insightful aid.
