A young counsellor is thrust into a murder that needs her therapeutic skills to solve in Mind Over Murder, a new novel. The life of Janna Rose, a dedicated EMDR counsellor, takes a dangerous turn after she stumbles upon criminal activity. Determined to uncover the truth and with a strong sense of social justice she tenaciously sets out, risking her own safety and the wellbeing of her loved ones.
As the story unfolds, Janna discovers the crime has far reaching consequences, impacting her professionally, personally, as well as threatening the environment. Jana makes it her mission to safeguard the town and its people from corporate land development and take-over.
This book would appeal to counsellors who enjoy the mystery and crime genre. The authors, Jake Lynch and Annabel McGoldrick, offer a glimpse into the professional life of a counsellor, incorporating sessional experiences that highlight the use of EMDR therapy and the integration of Internal Family Systems, based on McGoldrick’s work as a therapist and Lynch’s career in journalism.
The book weaves its way through Janna’s professional and personal life, offering readers a captivating journey through her experiences. Written in a series of engaging chapters, the narrative highlights the balance Janna maintains between her professional role and her personal challenges. Throughout the book, Janna’s deep connection to her community becomes increasingly evident through her unwavering determination to uncover the truth. Her interactions and connection with others reflect her genuine care and compassion. The story and characters are deeply linked through Janna’s commitment to those around her, all of whom are impacted in one way or another by the murder of her friend.
While the novel is fascinating, its straightforward approach may not resonate with readers looking for in-depth investigative details. Additionally, as noted by the authors, the depiction of EMDR techniques and procedures have been intentionally simplified to meet the creative demands of fiction.
Mind Over Murder is an excellent start to the Janna Rose series. I found the book to be an engaging and enjoyable read, with the emphasis on physical self-care activities a particularly valuable reminder for all therapists. The book is a great choice for fans of mystery and psychological crime fiction.
